Arthur Robert Ashe Jr., a former world number one in tennis, won three Grand Slam titles throughout his illustrious professional career. Except for the French Open, he is the only black guy to have won a Grand Slam title. On July 10, 1943, he was born in Richmond, Virginia. He began playing tennis at an early age and went to Maggie L. Walker High School, where he was a tennis team member. When he graduated from high school in 1963, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) gave him a tennis scholarship.
