Despite having complex relationships with family members, she built a close association with a group of “outcasts” at school.

Although Audre Lorde had been writing stories since she was fifteen, her career as a poet only began to take off in 1962, when her work first featured in Langston Hughes’s anthology of new black poets, the ‘New Negro Poets.’ Eventually, she began submitting her work to various black literary periodicals and overseas anthologies. A librarian at the St. Clare’s college of Nursing in 1965, she became the city school’s chief librarian in 1965 and remained in that post until 1968.
