Coleman started attending the Missionary Baptist Church of Texas when he was twelve years old. She moved to Oklahoma to study at the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University (Langston University), but she could only finish one term there owing to financial restraints. Coleman became the first African-American woman pilot in the world in 1921, against racial and gender restrictions.
