In 1890, she received a physics-mathematics degree from the Regio Instituto Tecnico Leonardo da Vinci. While her parents wanted Maria to become a teacher, she had her heart set on pursuing higher education. She had chosen to pursue a career as a doctor and enrolled in the University of Rome’s medical school in 1893. After finished medical school, She worked as a medical assistant at the university’s San Giovanni Hospital

She began to practice privately, but her interest in education led her to watch how children were taught. She saw a few problems with how the education system worked for children with disabilities and worked to fix them. She also wrote articles and gave talks about unique ways to teach developmentally disabled children. She decided to open the first school that used her method of teaching. It was a huge success and was soon used in many countries, including the U.S., China, and India.

Her teaching method grew popular because it allowed students to study at their speed and recognized them as individuals rather than class members. For this reason, she received the French Legion of Honor and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. On April 30th, 1952, she died.
