In the first grape farmers’ strike in California in 1965, this union joined the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee. Chavez targeted table grape producers in California in early 1968. The grape farmers’ struggle with Chavez for better wages and working conditions would continue for years to come. Workers gained significant successes under Chavez and his union as many farmers agreed to union contracts. Over time, the Teamsters Union and other farmers became more of a problem for him. To raise awareness of the situation of agricultural labourers, Chavez used non-violent methods. He organized protests, campaigned for boycotts, and went on hunger strikes.

He also raised the public’s awareness of the hazards of pesticides on the health of farm labourers in the United States. He died in San Luis, Arizona, on April 23, 1993, because of hunger strikes.
