On May 8, 1926, David Attenborough was born in Isleworth, Middlesex. Since he was a kid, he’s been collecting fossils, stones, and natural specimens. As a boy, he went to Wigginton Grammar School.
He won a scholarship to Clare College at Cambridge University, where he earned a degree in natural sciences in 1945. After retiring from the Navy in 1952, he joined the BBC as a producer for Talks. His narration of ‘Wildlife on One,’ a ‘BBC One wildlife series that ran between 1977 and 2005, lasted 253 episodes. The show drew between 8 million and 10 million viewers every week. He wrote an autobiography in 2002 called ‘Life on Air.’ His audiobooks include lots of works, and he narrates himself.
He has been awarded honorary Doctor of Science degrees in ‘The University of Oxford and ‘The University of Cambridge’ but also 32 honorary degrees from other British universities. ‘New Statesman’ magazine names him one of the top ten ‘Heroes of Our Time.’ Sadly, he passed away on August 24, 2014.
