Richard John Vitale, known by his nickname ” Dick Vitale ” is a basketball sportscaster from the United States. He is most known for his 41-year run as an ESPN college basketball analyst, during which time he served as a head coach in the collegiate and professional leagues. In the city of Passaic, New Jersey, Dick Vitale was born on June 9th, 1939. After completing his high school education at East Rutherford High School, Vitale got his bachelor of science degree from Seton Hall University in business management in 1963.
Later, he attended William Paterson University to get his master’s degree in education there. In 1958, Vitale began his coaching career in an elementary school in Garfield, New Jersey. When Dick Lloyd became the head coach of Rutgers University in 1971, Vitale became an assistant coach. He served as head coach for the next two seasons at the University of Michigan. Vitale departed the Titans and collegiate basketball to coaching the Detroit Pistons of the NBA in the 1978–79 season, directing the team to a 30–52 (.366) record.
