Douglas Adams Quotes About Funny, Technology, Universe, Life, Love, Death, Fish, President, Deadlines & Leadership! English playwright and novelist Douglas Noel Adams was born on March 11th, 1952, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From 1959 through 1970, Adams attended Brentwood School in Essex, England. Until then, his primary areas of interest had been science rather than the arts. It wasn’t until he was eleven that his instructor Frank Halford urged him to pursue a career in writing.
When Adams left school in 1970, he was confident that he would be a success as a writer. Adams worked as a hospital porter, a barn builder, a bodyguard, and a cleaner for a chicken coop. No matter how few of his works were chosen, Adams never gave up. Nevertheless, he found himself in a bind once more by the year’s conclusion. He finally adapted to his circumstances and chose to keep pushing ahead.
Adams’s most famous piece, ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,’ was an enormous commercial success, becoming the best-selling book in the United Kingdom. In addition, his novel made him the youngest writer to win the Golden Pen Award. Another bestseller of his was “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe,” published in 1980; this was followed by “The Universe and Everything,” published in 1982; “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish,” published in 1984.
More than fifteen million copies of Douglas Adams’s books were sold in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. His works were also bestsellers in many other languages, notably German and Swedish. His masterpiece, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” ranks #24 on Waterstone’s Novels and Channel’s selection of the 100 most remarkable books of the century. After a long illness, Douglas Adams passed away in Santa Barbara, California, in May of 2001.
