Israeli stateswoman, teacher, and political figure Golda Meir was the fourth prime minister of Israel and a member of the kibbutz movement. She was born on May 3, 1898, in Kiev, Ukraine. Golda Mabovitch went to Milwaukee Normal School in 1916-17 against her parents’ wishes that she marry and stop attending school. Golda stepped up her political activism as a representative of the Histadrut Trade Union and a delegate to the World Zionist Organization.
When Israel proclaimed independence in 1948, Meir was one of the signers. However, as hostilities erupted between Israel and its Arab neighbors in the same year, she went home and was elected to Israel’s parliament. As foreign minister in 1956, she established links with African nations and bolstered relations with the United States and Latin America.
Meir decided to step down from public life at the age of 68. They pushed her to accept the general secretary position even though she was exhausted and sick. Upon the passing of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in 1969, she opted to carry out the balance of his tenure instead of announcing her intention to resign. Her party won the election the same year, allowing her to serve as prime minister for four years.
In her time in office, Meir became known as a skilled diplomat. Egypt and Syria launched an assault on Israel in the middle of the Yom Kippur War in October 1973, and she was there to see it. Many people blamed the government’s poor planning for the deaths of more than 2,500 Israelis even though Israel won. Among other reasons, Meir had to step down from her position in October 1974 due to her advanced age and deteriorating health. Meir passed away on December 8, 1978, in Jerusalem, at 80 years old.
