Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I was responsible for modernizing the country for several decades before the famine and political opposition forced him from power in 1974. On July 23, 1892, he was born in Ejersa Gora in a mud hut. His original name was Lij Tafari Makonnen. Ras Makonnen, the Harar governor, was the only surviving legitimate son. In addition to his uncle, his father’s cousin, Emperor Menelik II, was a crucial ally to his father.
In 1906 his father’s death, Tafari was taken under the wing of Menelik, who looked upon him as a possible candidate. Young Ethiopians came to associate the progressive Tafari with the hopes and dreams of the country in the new century and curry favor with the West.
During the 1923 League of Nations session, he led Ethiopia into membership. The extent of his power only grew. He became king in 1928, and two years later, after Zauditu’s death, he became emperor and took the name Haile Selassie (“Might of the Trinity”). The next four decades were a celebration of Haile Selassie’s authority. In addition to introducing a new constitution and consolidating his power, he significantly improved schools and the police.
Haile Selassie’s rule was undermined by famine, high unemployment, and frustration with the government’s inability to address the country’s problems during the early 1970s. Mutinies broke out in the army in February 1974 over low pay, while a guerrilla war spread across Eritrea. As a result of a coup, Haile Selassie was ousted from power and held under house arrest until he died in 1975.
