Hunter S. Thompson Quotes About Death, Music, Fear and Loathing, Life, Love, The Edge, Politics, Weird, Goodreads & Success! As a counterculture hero, Hunter S. Thompson was responsible for the development of Gonzo journalism, in which a writer gets so immersed in their research and tale that they end up taking center stage. American author and journalist Hunter S Thompson, best known for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas(1971), has a reputation for being rude in his writing style. He was born July 18, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Thompson, an ardent sports fan, did join the Castlewood Athletic Club in Louisville, Kentucky, where he shone at basketball. The Highland Middle, Atherton High, and Louisville Male High schools all made graduates who went on to join the exclusive Athenaeum Literary Association.
Thompson was often in legal problems while he was a kid and teenager. Graduating from high school, Thompson enlisted in the Air Force, where he developed a passion for writing and exhibited outlandish conduct. Regularly, Thompson wrote for various publications throughout the late 1960s and into the early 1970s. Gonzo journalism was born out of a journalist’s need to register and fulfill deadlines while having a creative block.
His popularity peaked during the height of his fame, and famous journals like The New Yorker and Playboy ran stories on him. Thompson had a column in the San Francisco Examiner from 1985 to 1989. Thompson spent much of his life on a 100-acre property in Woody Creek, Colorado, where he wrote, drank, shotguns, and rode motorcycles. Thompson shot himself to death on February 20, 2005.
