Jim Elliot Quotes About Prayer, Death, Movie, Wife, Life & Success! Philips James Elliot was a renowned evangelical Christian missionary who, alongside four other missionaries, gave their lives for the gospel while serving in Ecuador. On October 8th, 1927, in the city of Portland, Jim Elliot was born. In 1941, he enrolled in Benson Polytechnic High School’s architectural drawing class. When he went to school there, he was a football team member, wrote for the school newspaper, and had an exceptional voice.
He began his work on behalf of the “Student Foreign Missions Fellowship” and spoke with an “InterVarsity Christian Fellowship” group on the importance of the Holy Spirit in missions. In 1948, he attended the ‘International Student Missionary Convention’ at the University of Illinois, when he discovered the enormous possibility of working with the South American indigenous communities nearby.
In 1951, he made plans to fly to Ecuador to persuade the government of the need to deal with the South American tribes and raise money for his journey. In 1952, he and a buddy, Pete Fleming, traveled to Ecuador to preach the gospel to the Quechua Indians. In Shandia for more than three years, he sought to connect with the Waodoni tribe, who lived deep in the forests. The lady who abandoned the tribe was the one who taught him and his friend the language.
For many years, Jim Elliot kept a journal explaining his experiences as a missionary. In 1978, the contents of his diaries were made available to the public for the first time. The Huaorani warriors assassinated him and his four friends on January 8th, 1956, when he was just 28 years old.
