Morrison started the Doors in Venice, California, in 1965, alongside pianist Ray Manzarek, who was also a founding member. The group spent the first two years of their career in relative obscurity before achieving national notoriety with the release of their first song, “Light My Fire,” which reached number one in the United States.

During his time working with the Doors, Jim Morrison released six studio albums, all commercial successes. His improvisational spoken word poetry sections as the band performed live were well-known. Manzarek claimed Morrison “embodied the counterculture insurrection of the hippie generation.” On stage, performances were hampered by Morrison’s alcoholism throughout the band’s long history. Despite different accounts, Morrison died in Paris on july 3, 1971. He became an honorary member of the notorious 27 clubs in his short time on this earth.
