Following the popularity of his first work, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), Goethe went to Weimar in November 1775. This writer was a pioneer of the “Sturm und Drang” literary movement. Goethe served as a member of the Duke’s Privy Council, served on the military and highway commissioners, directed the reopening of silver mines in Ilmenau, and launched many administrative changes at the University of Jena during his first 10 years in Weimar.
