Henry Wheeler Shaw, better known by his pen name Josh Billings, was a very well American comedian and lecturer who was best known for his works ‘Josh Billings’ Sayings’, ‘Everybody’s Friend,’ and ‘Josh Billings’ Trump Kards.’ In 1832, Josh Billings was admitted for studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He finished his study there but not from there and instead moved to the West when he was dismissed from the college for removing the clapper from the bell.
After moving to Poughkeepsie in 1858, he started writing. Early in his career, he wrote an essay on the Mule. He did not get much attention at first. Josh Billings’ Farmers Almanax, a parody of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, was another huge success.
