The former professor at the University of Southern California’s Department of Special Education, Felice Leonardo “Leo” Buscaglia, popularly known by “Dr. Love,” was an American author and public Speaker. On March 31, 1924, he was born in Los Angeles, California, to a family of Italian immigrants. He spent his early youth in the Italian town of Aosta before returning to the United States to pursue his schooling. He received his education from Theodore Roosevelt High School (Los Angeles).
Following his service in the Navy during World War II, Buscaglia enrolled in the University of Southern California, where he received three degrees (BA 1950, MA 1954, and Ph.D. 1963) before ultimately entering the faculty. Upon his retirement, Buscaglia was appointed Professor at Large, one of only two such positions available on campus.
The death of one of his students inspired Buscaglia to reflect on human disconnectedness and the purpose of life, prompting him to create a non-credit course at USC called Love 1A, which is still in effect today. This was the inspiration for his first book, LOVE.
The Public Broadcasting System (PBS) recognized his energetic speaking style and his broadcast lectures became quite famous in the 1980s. For a while, his speeches, which were usually shown during fundraising events, brought in more money than any other PBS program. His novels became national bestsellers because of his wide-ranging exposure and emotional storytelling style. His five books were simultaneously on the New York Times Best Sellers List. On June 12, 1998, the renowned Speaker was passed away after a heart attack.
