Garvey began working as an apprentice printer at the age of 14. In 1907, he participated in an abortive printer’s strike, which started his interest in politics. During this time, Garvey developed a strong interest in politics and journalism. The Watchman was the name of his first publication. At this time, he worked as an editor for many left-wing publications in Panama, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.

He traveled to Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador, where he worked as an editor for many leftist publications. Instead of a brief time back home, he went to England, where he met African nationalists who sparked his interest in Africa and black history. During this period, he was profoundly influenced by Booker T. Washington’s (1856–1915) “Up from Slavery,” which he read.

The Garvey movement was the most significant global movement of Africans in history. More than eight million people joined the movement at its height in 1922-1924. There were divisions between younger and older youngsters, and as the children got older,  did the movement’s youngest members. He said that black people should learn more about their history and culture, urging them to do so. He was the first voice to call for black empowerment boldly. Sadly, he passed away on June 10, 1940, leaving a lasting legacy.
