She is widely regarded as a critical initiator of the Stonewall riots. She was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on August 24, 1945. In part because of her Christian upbringing, Johnson had a rough childhood. After graduating from high school, Johnson relocated to Greenwich Village in New York City. When Johnson’s corpse was recovered in the Hudson River outside of West Village Piers, New York City, on July 6, 1992, she was 46 years old.
