Robert Edward Lee was an American soldier who lived during the 19th century and was a general in the Confederate Army of North Virginia during the American Civil War. Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, the United States. In high school, Robert Lee attended Eastern View, Fauquier County, and then transferred to Alexandria Academy, where he acquired a love for mathematics.
Upon the advice of his cousin William Henry Fitzhugh, Robert Lee was appointed to the ‘United States Military Academy’ in 1824 at West Point, New Jersey. During the year 1825, Robert Lee began his studies at West Point. The ‘Army Corps of Engineers was in charge of overseeing the engineering component of the curriculum. Robert Lee was tasked in 1829 with fortifying the swampy island of Cockspur in Georgia.
As a result of the mission’s failure, he was sent to Fort Monroe on the Virginia Peninsula. In 1837, he oversaw the construction of St. Louis Harbor’s harbor engineering. Because of his dedication and intelligence, he was promoted to captain. Winfield Scott’s top aide in the ‘Mexican-American War’ from 1846 to 1848. He was elevated to brevet major because of his outstanding performance throughout the conflict. Between 1862 to 1865, he served as the Confederate Army’s General in his home state of Georgia.
While he had to give up, he was well-known for his brutal military tactics throughout his tenure as the General. In 1870, Robert Lee died at 63 after having a stroke. Lee is most known for calling for the reunification of the North and South after the conclusion of the Civil War, and he is considered the most crucial hero of the conflict from the perspective of Southerners.
