In June 1863, he first engaged in combat with the American army. In 1865, he led an assault against the recently constructed Fort Rice in what is now known as North Dakota, proving himself to be a daring warrior. As a result of the betrayal by the United States government, Sitting Bull came to mistrust white men.

In the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, he defeated the American troops under Commander George Armstrong Custer, wiping out the American general and his whole army. He and his surviving followers crossed the border into Canada in May 1877, where they lived for four years until returning to the Dakota territory in 1881.

He was kept in jail until 1883. In 1885, he was permitted to leave the reservation and perform with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. For his efforts to help the less poor, he became famous and earned some money. Several Hollywood movies and documentaries have been created about him and the Sioux tribes. On December 15, 1890, the legendary warrior died.
