In her early years, she was sold from one household to another. The Dumont family bought her in 1810 and sold her to a life of severe torture. Before slavery was outlawed in New York, Isabella and her baby departed the Dumont estate in 1826. She converted to Methodism on June 1, 1843, and took the name Sojourner Truth. While in Massachusetts, she met prominent suffragists and anti-slavery activists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass.

For this reason, Garrison wrote The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave. In addition, she spoke at the first national women’s rights conference and a women’s rights convention, both held that same year. She is known for her most renowned statement, “Ain’t I a Woman,” which she delivered at this event since the audience felt she was a man due to her strong presence.

Her exact words in this address are still up for controversy, but she called for equal rights for women and blacks. Truth has a reputation for being an effective communicator because of its status as a strong speaker. There were hundreds of people in the crowd as she spoke on slavery and suffrage. Even during American Civil War, Truth did help recruit black men for the Union Army. Then, she moved to Michigan, where she worked for the rights of ex-slaves. November 26, 1883, was the day of Truth’s death.
