Steven Moffat is a Scottish television creator and producer best known as the showrunner, screenwriter, and executive producer of the BBC One revival of Doctor Who and Sherlock, a modern detective thriller. On November 18, 1961, he was born in Paisley, Scotland. While attending classes at the University of Glasgow, he was active with the student television station known as Glasgow University Student Television. After obtaining his Master of Arts in English from the University of Glasgow, he worked as a teacher at Cowdenknowes High School in Greenock for the subsequent three and a half years.
In the 1980s, he created a drama named War Zones, produced at the 1985 Glasgow Mayfest and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and a titled musical Knifer. In the latter part of the 1990s, he wrote Chalk, drawing inspiration from his time working as an English instructor. Moffat, who has been a fan of Doctor Who for his whole life, penned the comedy sketch episode “The Curse of Fatal Death” for the charity telethon “Comic Relief,” shown at the beginning of 1999.
The dynamic of his relationship with television producer Sue Vertue served as the inspiration for his comedy, “Coupling,” which aired in the early 2000s. It was revealed in March 2004 that Moffat would be working on a new season of Doctor Who as a writer. It ran from 2005 to 2008, and he authored six episodes for executive producer Russell T Davies.
