Gastonia, North Carolina resident Thomas Sowell was born on June 30, 1930. Because of financial troubles, his academic career was interrupted when he was 17 years old. However, he went on to work in a variety of professions, including as a delivery person for Western Union. While serving in the military during the Korean War in 1951, he was trained as a Marine Corps photographer rather than being transferred to Korea, which allowed him to continue his photographic career.
