Gastonia, North Carolina resident Thomas Sowell was born on June 30, 1930. Because of financial troubles, his academic career was interrupted when he was 17 years old. His doctorate in economics was earned at the University of Chicago in 1968. Many of America’s most famous colleges and think tanks have had Sowell as a faculty member or consultant for the last three decades or more.
