Expelled from school, he worked as a printer’s devil before transitioning to a compositor. By 1841, he worked full-time as a writer, editing many publications and penning articles and poetry for magazines in New York and Brooklyn.

Whitman published Leaves of Grass, a collection of 12 poems, on his dime in 1855, after having started work on it as early as 1847, according to Whitman’s statements. The song, eventually known as “Song of Myself,” in which the author declares himself the symbolic representation of the familiar people, was prefaced by an exposition of his beliefs on poetry in the collection. In a well-known letter of congratulations, Emerson was one of few academics who appreciate Whitman’s work. The last edition of Leaves of Grass, created under Whitman’s direct supervision, came in 1892.

From 1862-to 1865, Whitman volunteered her services as a hospital nurse in Washington, D.C. “Passage to India” debuted in the 1871 edition of Leaves of Grass. His literary collection Democratic Vistas was released in 1871. In many ways, Whitman was a complicated individual.
